Rest Easy is a long-thought-about dream of mine to combat the monetization and capitalization of basic human processes and needs. In a past life, I did financial counseling in nonprofit organizations with customers trying to make ends meet. You quickly uncover the deeply ingrained financial inequality of our country and how that manifests within all of us in our day to day lives.
I’ve had the unfortunate pleasure to help my family figure out how to deal with the logistics of a relative passing, as many people do. Not only is it something we aren’t prepared for emotionally, but in the midst of grieving, we’re forced to learn all about the ins and outs (and come up with thousands of dollars) of the funeral business in the heat of one of the worst moments in our lives.
As of 2023, the average cost for a funeral in the United States hovers between $7,000 - $12,000. A number that’s hard to reach when our median household (2+ people) income is just $70,784. In both of my experiences, each funeral totaled just over $12,000- and both were in a rural city in Indiana. Hardly a popular, bustling metropolitan.
Rest Easy wants to help ease the monetary stress surrounding a loved one passing by using donor money to reduce (or cover) cremation and funeral costs for families in need. I’m passionate about making funerals accessible for everyone, regardless of economic status, and I hope you are too!
